This weekend – January 8-10 – we will attempt to put away 2020 as we begin the 2021 racing calendar with the launch of the Superkarts! USA Winter Series. The ‘Spring Training’ program begins its fourth season with the opening two rounds at the AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex presented by MG Tires. Racers and teams will use this weekend to begin the process of setting up their 2021 programs, with those moving to new homes and chassis brands, others graduating up or moving to another category for the new season. All of that begins with the opening weekend of the SKUSA Winter Series around the 7/10-mile AMR circuit in the clockwise direction, welcoming over 200 entries in the nine categories.

With the championships on the line in several classes, the final round of the Superkarts! USA Winter Series was contested at AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex Presented by MG Tires on Sunday and the racing was once again intense and entertaining. While class leading drivers like Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Renato Jader David, Billy Musgrave, Justin Peck and Dan Breitenstein had already locked up their titles thanks to a trio of strong results in the first three rounds, the championships in the remaining classes were wide open. As a note, any and all championship confirmations in this report are based on EKN’s own calculations, so look for SKUSA to release the official point standings in the near future.

The Superkarts! USA Winter Series is wrapping up this weekend at the AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex Presented by MG Tires, and the third round of the four-race series on Saturday provided some incredible action. The 12-turn, 0.7-mile track is being run in the clockwise direction for this doubleheader, and the technical nature of this layout provided more than enough of a challenge for the drivers in the paddock this weekend. Piquet Sports’ Olin Galli (CRG) proved to be the man to beat in X30 Senior, taking the lead midway through the race before pulling away to score the victory. In the X30 Junior and KA100 Junior classes, Italian phenom Andrea Kimi Antonello steered his KartSport North America Kart Republic chassis to dominant wins to extend his victory streak to six straight races to begin the 2020 SKUSA season. Antonelli has not yet been beat in the Winter Series this year and has all but clinched both class championships.

Galli qualified on pole for the Rolison Performance Group X30 Senior class, and led early in the Prefinal before RPG’s Ryan Norberg (Kosmic) assumed the point on lap three, holding the position to take the win to earn the inside front row starting spot for the 22-lap main event. After the initial opening lap chaos that saw Arias Deukmedjian jumping the point, Galli quickly assumed the lead and was never challenged after that, leaving those behind him to fight for the final podium positions. A scrap for the position developed between Norberg and Deukmedjian that came to head on the final lap, as Deukmedjian was able to overtake the point leader and four-time SKUSA Pro Tour for the position. It was a strong performance by Deukmedjian, but the podium for Norberg was his third straight and has positioned him solidly to defend his Winter Series championship on Sunday. Solo Kart USA’s Louie Westover earned his second top-five finish with a fourth-place result while impressive rookie senior Luca Mars (Redspeed) capped the top-five.

The third second of the Superkarts! USA Winter Series is set to conclude this weekend at the AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex presented by MG Tires. The Homestead, Miami facility will welcome competitors once again, returning after the opening event in January. The difference between the two events, the track direction and possibly weather. For Rounds Three and Four, the 7/10-mile course will go in the clockwise direction. While a short rain shower hit the area last month, more precipitation is forecasted for the February weekend which may have a big impact on those reaching the podium and earning top spots in the championship chases.

Wednesday and Thursday were unofficial practice with Friday hosting five official sessions for testing. Round 3 is set for Saturday, including qualifying, Prefinal and Final. Round 4 is a repeat format on Sunday. The championship chase will conclude on Sunday, with drivers taking the best three of the four rounds to count toward the final point standings.

eKartingNews.com is set for the opening event of its 2020 Trackside Live program. The voice of Superkarts! USA, EKN’s own Rob Howden, will be calling the action all weekend. Those unable to attend can listen in to the live broadcast – presented this weekend by Franklin Motorsports, Margay Racing, and Rolison Performance Group. Superkarts! USA threw the green flag on its 2020 season this past weekend at the AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex Presented by MG Tires, kicking off the third edition of the organization’s Winter Series in south Florida. The event set an series attendance record with over 240 entries, including the new inclusion of the popular Margay Ignite program. Warm temperatures in the high-70s and low-80s were accompanied by significant winds and a brief rain shower on Sunday, and the competition was good as it’s been with some truly epic battles for race wins. Canadian Patrick Woods-Toth (Prime / Birel ART) outgunned X30 Senior National #1 Ryan Norberg (RPG / Kosmic) in Saturday’s main event to score the win, while RPG’s Hannah Greenemeier (Kosmic) turned in a career performance to star in Sunday’s final. In the premier gearbox category – Pro Shifter – Mike Rolison’s lead shifterkart driver Kyle Wick ( RPG / Tony Kart) proved his worthiness of running the #1 plate by beating four-time SKUSA SuperNationals winner Bill Musgrave (MRC / Croc Promotion) to win both Saturday and Sunday main events. The Sunday final was particularly thrilling. More on that later.

A massive field of 53 drivers took the track for Saturday’s split X30 Senior qualifying sessions and Norberg came out of the gate on fire, winning the overall pole and then topping his Prefinal to lead the field to the green flag in the 22-lap main event. SKUSA split the X30 field into two Prefinals after qualifying, transferring 15 drivers directly to the main event. The remaining drivers ran a 10-lap Last Chance Qualifier, with 14 drivers extending their day into the final. Sebastian Montoya (Tony Kart) won the first Prefinal on Saturday over Thomas Nepveu (Birel ART) and Bryson Morris (Kosmic). Norberg was followed to the checkered in his Prefinal by Woods-Toth and Greenemeier. Read full story on eKartingNews.com
