The Superkarts! USA California ProKart Challenge kicked off the second half of the season at the Santa Maria Karting Association facility last weekend. The Santa Maria, California facility hosted Round Four of the six-round championship program on the July 17-18 weekend, where coastal California weather greeted the competitors of the nine categories and a brief rain shower made things extra interesting for one category during the main events. The championships in each of the divisions are taking shape, with drivers picking up key victories toward their goal of winning a California ProKart Challenge championship.
One of the most exciting main events on the weekend was the Nash Motorsportz KA100 Senior class. Welcoming 29 drivers as the largest class on the weekend, competitors had to also battle a brief change in the weather conditions. Ethan Lampe began the event with fast time in qualifying, posting a 49.598-lap to edge out four other drivers by a mere four hundredths of a second. Among those was Logan Toke finishing in the second spot after the timed session. Lampe was out of the race on the opening circuit of the 14-lap Prefinal, allowing Toke to control much of the race. Aiden Kempf reached the line first at the end. However, a three-second penalty for contact dropped him to second, moving Toke to the pole position for the main event. As the green flag waved with all drivers on dry Evinco tires, rain suddenly covered the track. It made for some exciting opening laps before the track eventually dried up and lap times fell to standard pace. Out front, Kempf controlled the field in the wet and the dry, leading all 24 laps for the victory to become the fourth different winner in four rounds. Toke was able to fight back to second after slipping down the order early in the race. Hard charger was top qualifier Lampe, coming from 28th to third. Fast lap of the race went to Kyriakos Sioukas in fourth, with Round Two winner and championship leader Dante Yu finishing fifth.

The Touch and Go (TaG) engine platform took the USA karting scene by storm in the early 2000s, but it was not until 2008 that Superkarts! USA introduced the Junior category to the SuperNationals. Since then, 13 different drivers have claimed victory on SuperSunday – including two current Formula 1 drivers (George Russell in 2011 and Lance Stroll in 2012). Logan Sargeant won the class in 2014 before becoming the only USA driver to win the FIA World Championship in Junior competitionin 2015. Now, he’s set to be on the grid in F1 for 2023. Others make this list a very well-established group of former winners, including last year’s victor Jeremy Fletcher, who became only the second driver in SuperNationals history to win twice in the same event – taking the top honors in both KA100 and X30 Junior. The Superkarts! USA Pro Tour has invaded the Utah Motorsports Campus for the weekend, and the 0.9-mile, 18-turn Alan Wilson designed track provided the stage for some tremendous racing during the opening day of competition on Saturday. The 11th running of the organization’s SpringNationals began in extremely cool temperatures, but as the day heated up, so did the action. With the temps rising to the mid-60s by the early afternoon, the main events featured some tremendously close racing and tons of wheel-to-wheel dicing – with non of the nine categories seeing one driver sweep the action on the day. Four-time SKUSA Pro Tour champion Ryan Norberg dominated the X30 Senior main event for Rolison Performance, leading an impressive 1-2 finish with teammate Branyon Tiner, while AJ Myers scored his third straight Pro Shifter win of the 2021 season to put Magik Kart USA back on top of the podium. With nine classes running in eight race groups, the action did not stop all day.
The Ryan Norberg was a similar ‘Ryan Norberg’ to who we saw in 2019 here in Utah for the SpringNationals. A dominating performance in the Rolison Performance Group X30 Senior class, but not a complete perfect day. Rolison Performance Group / Kosmic teammate Hannah Greenemeier edge Norberg for fast time in qualifying by 15 thousandths of a second with a 57.663-lap. Contact in the opening lap with Greenemeier and Cole Morgan (RPM / Tony Kart) sent them to the back of the field. That allowed Norberg to lead all 12 laps of the Prefinal unchallenged with Branyon Tiner (RPG / Kosmic) driving to second. That was how they would start the Final, and finish the main event with Norberg leading all 20 laps, recording the fast lap of race, winning by over four seconds. Tiner was able to get away in second, giving RPG a 1-2 finish. The fight was for third with Dante Yu (PGR / Ricciardo) moving up two spots to the third step on the podium. Greenemeier put in a great drive in both the Prefinal and Final. Moving up to 16th in the Prefinal, she powered her way to fourth by the end of the Final, but a pushback bumper penalty dropped her to sixth. That moved Canadian Thomas Nepveu (PSL / Birel ART) to fourth and Thomas Annunziata (MDR / Tony Kart) to fifth.

For the second straight year, Superkarts! USA has launched its coast-to-coast national season with their Winter Series in Florida. The organization launched the new ‘pre-season training’ program in 2018 and drew incredibly strong numbers, and the momentum continued in January with over 230 entries battling it out over the two days of competition. The drivers and teams have returned to AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex Presented by MG Tires for the third and fourth rounds of the series, which will crown the champions. The primary candidates made themselves known during the opening weekend, but with the track being run in the reverse direction this time around, all bets are off.
The question in the new Pro Shifter category is apparent: can anyone stop 2018 SKUSA Pro Tour champion AJ Myers? The Mad Old Nut Racing / Croc Promotions USA pilot swept the opening weekend in Homestead, earning a perfect score for the first two rounds over two-time SKUSA SuperNationals winner Billy Musgrave (MRC / Aluminos). The duo ran 1-2 throughout the weekend, with Mathias Ramirez (PSL / Birel ART) sitting third. Ramirez will be back to challenge Myers and Musgrave, as will with Andrew Bujdoso (Mad Old Nut / Croc), Kyle Wick (CRG) and Max Hewitt (CRG). The field is gaining international flavor with five different countries represented, including Brazilian Pedro Piquet (CRG), the son of Formula One world champion Nelson Piquet. The second half of the 2021 California ProKart Challenge is on the horizon, beginning on the July 17-18 weekend at the Santa Maria Karting Association facility amidst an attractive west coast, cool and breezy weather forecast. Round Four of the 2021 championship chase will take place at the Santa Maria, California circuit with the new standard two-day race format for the Superkarts! USA regional program. Two events and three rounds of racing have been completed thus far into the season, with an exciting weekend planned at the SMKA ‘K’ layout to further shape those title chases.
It all began in April, with the opening round contested at the Buttonwillow Raceway Park before the series hosted its double-header weekend at CalSpeed Karting during the month of June. The lucrative $70,000 purse – including 2021 SKUSA SuperNationals 24 tickets, entries to the 2022 California ProKart Challenge program and year-end prizes provided by IAME USA West and Evinco/MG Tires – await those who continue to battle for supremacy at the California ProKart Challenge.
