There was a palpable level of excitement on the streets of Lancaster, California on Friday morning, as final preparations were being made for this coming weekend’s Grand Prix. The city’s downtown core was taken over on Thursday morning and crews worked throughout day and late into the evening, hauling haybales, plastic barriers and fencing into place around the 0.8-mile temporary circuit. The third annual Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix may fire up officially on Saturday morning, but only thanks to months and months of planning and management. After all that work, it’s finally time to go racing in Lancaster.
The City of Lancaster approached the Superkarts! USA promotional team earlier this year in an effort to raise the bar for their Grand Prix, and the new partnership has resulted in several adjustments, both to the class structure and the physical layout of the track. The class line-up for the race was evolved to include much of the SKUSA / ProKart Challenge structure, but the addition of a PRD class has brought in additional racers, although not as many as were expected. Regardless, both Stock Moto and TaG racing will be front-and-center this weekend to excite those in the trackside viewing areas, which are expected to be packed. One of SKUSA’s primary moves was to re-locate the track to the west a couple of blocks right into the downtown core, the Boulevard, which will provide a new look to the layout. Supporting the local business community is a key goal in the planning of this race, and SKUSA’s Tom Kutscher wanted to make sure that these businesses would see increased traffic as a result. The new track is positioned right in the middle of a thriving area filled with restaurants, bars and shops, and will include four 90-degrees corners and a tight hairpin that leads onto a 1000’ straightaway, one that will likely support the nickname that is being thrown around – ‘the Fastest Street Race in American Karting’. A $200 check awaits the first driver to hit the 100 mph mark in the speed trap that the local law enforcement has set up in turn five. Most people have their money on Pro Shifter drivers Brad Dunford, Clinton Schoombee or Nicky Freytag or S4 stud Jimmy McNeil.

The third annual Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix is set to take place October 7-9, and will be the first time Superkarts! USA will sanction and organize the event for the City of Lancaster, California. The three-day karting and city-wide festival is sure to bring the best karters along the west coast to Southern California for what will serve as the final tune-up for the organization’s Pro Tour finale -- the SKUSA SuperNationals XV in Las Vegas next month. The city, its local businesses and its citizens are behind the event 100%, with more than 30,000 spectators to line the fences throughout the weekend and take part in a number of activities planned on and around the street course.
Among the first changes with SKUSA taking over the on-track operations is a complete change in the track layout. With safety the number one concern, a new 7/10-mile course was designed around the same central area of the original layout – with SKUSA’s full supply of barriers used at the SKUSA SuperNationals. The City of Lancaster has been instrumental in preparing the course for competition, with repaving a large percentage of the track to ensure a safe surface. Overall, the new layout will provide a unique and challenging circuit for competitors.
The class structure for this one-off event will contain up to nine categories: six from the Superkarts! USA rulebook and up to three local option divisions. The headline category will be the Pro Shifter division, which will combine the S1 Pro and S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto classes. TaG Senior, S4 Master Stock Moto, TaG Master, TaG Junior, and TaG Cadet will wrap up the SKUSA divisions in the line-up. Senior PRD (Light), Master PRD (Heavy) and KPV 4 Heavy are planned to join them for the weekend, and although entries are coming in steadily for most classes, a special reminder goes out to the potential KPV4 competitors, which are especially thin at this point. Unless SKUSA receives 10-15 entries as a minimum by this Sunday evening’s pre-registration cut-off, this class will be eliminated from this (and most likely, any future) event.

We have made available for purchase in our online store Pit Passes for the Streets of Lancaster. One day passes are $15 and event passes are $20. Anyone wishing to enter the paddock, scales, or grid areas will need this pass. This includes your mechanics and any other support personnel. Those wishing not to enter these areas can still watch the race for free from anywhere outside of this gated area. These passes will be available for purchase at the track should any spectator decide they want to enter this gated area. |
