| ProKart Challenge South Heads to San Diego for Round 5 of 6 |

Championship points are becoming more crucial as the Superkarts! USA ProKart Challenge South program heads further south to Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California for Round #5 on the July 25th-26th weekend. At the home of the San Diego Chargers, the temporary circuit on the 1.1-mile West Course track configuration in the stadium’s parking lot will run in the same reverse direction that was used when SKUSA visited the facility for the WinterNationals in February. Heading into the penultimate round, two classes see the championship leaders separated by just a few points. The S3 Heavy category has had three drivers running neck-and-neck all year long, with Phil Conte currently holding the top spot. Just 10 points separate him from Marty Henderson, while Grant Westmorland is only 75 points behind Conte. G2 has a great battle brewing between Steve Donia and Eric Ortega. With three wins, Donia has the advantage over Ortega; however, his advantage is just 15 points heading to San Diego. In S3 Light, WinterNationals champion Bobby Legate is at the point, although the rest of the field has been on the charge of late, including Round #4 winner Patrick Cushenberry, who is just 113 points back -- with Clinton Schoombee not far behind. In the S4 divisions, Willy Musgrave sits on top of the Light category despite losing his first feature race in Round #4. Barely 100 points back sits Bryce Miller, while Billy Musgrave gained ground with his win at CalSpeed in late-June. Ken Schilling still holds the number one spot in the S4 Heavy class, although he has struggled over the last two rounds. Alex King earned the feature win in Fontana, closing the point gap considerably. Despite continued pressure from national drivers making visits to the ProKart Challenge circuit each weekend, Jimmy McNeil has put in impressive runs in S1 week-in and week-out to control the championship chase. Peter Abba continues to improve each weekend, and will likely be challenging McNeil during the final two rounds. Robert Marks’ win streak in G1 came to an end at CalSpeed; however, he still has the strangle hold on the standings, leading Troy Butts by 200 points. In TaG competition, Zach Dericco and Billy Cleavelin sit on top of their respective classes. Dericco has a 160-point advantage in the TaG Senior division over Buttonwillow winner Travis Whitehead, while Cleavelin has a clean sweep of the feature races in Masters thus far -- which gives him a comfortable margin over Matt Kimball. However, with the one drop rule for the championship, anything can happen. For those looking to get some extra track time, the San Diego Karting Association will be running their club race this coming Sunday. Also of note, during the PKC weekend, there is a local noise restriction which will push the drivers meeting to 8:30 am and practice to 9:00 am. Local hotels are booked for the weekend, due to a big convention in town, so PKC encourages on site camping at the track -- at no extra charge. |
