The California ProKart Challenge returns to action this weekend (May 18-19), as the series hosts round three at the famed Adams Motorsports Park. The legendary Riverside facility will welcome racers from all across California and surrounding states, as the six-event championship series completes the first half of the 2012 season. Coming off the record-breaking SKUSA Pro Tour SpringNationals and successful starts for two other regional programs, Superkarts! USA is experiencing a great first half of 2012. Another large turnout for the California PKC is expected for Adams, as the second quarter of the year and the championship battles rage on.
The Adams Motorsports Park has been hosting karting action for over 50 years. The 7/10-mile course has been the site of many historic events in the sport, with some big names having competed at the longest running kart racing facility in the world. Racers will be traveling to Adams this weekend, ready for a fun event SKUSA-style, along with the chance to qualify for a part of the $65,000 prize package the organization has offered this season. The championships are far from being over, with just two weekends in the books and plenty of racing left in 2012.

Nearly 100 racers converged on the Willow Springs Kart Track in Rosamond, California last weekend for the second stop of the 2012 California ProKart Challenge, a Superkarts! USA regional program. On March 23-24, the flagship program for the organization hosted its second round of the six-race championship on the fast and challenging 6/10-mile course. Now with 1/3 of the title chase in the books, the contenders and pretenders have been sorted out, with two drivers standing out above the rest in the headline categories -- Matt Johnson in TaG Senior and Jimmy McNeil in S1 Pro Stock Moto.
Carrying the #3 SKUSA plate for 2012, Johnson is on a mission to earn the #1 plate for the 2013 season. Beginning the California PKC season with a solid performance at Buttonwillow, Johnson backed it up with an event sweep this past weekend. Johnson topped the charts for the Leading Edge Motorsports-sponsored category, posting a 43.860-lap. Dakota Dickerson, the #2 plate holder for 2012, ended the session in second, with Canadian Lorenzo Mandarino making his first start of the season with a third place effort in qualifying. Johnson was able to lead flag-to-flag in both 12-lap heat races to secure the pole position for the main event, with Mandarino running second in each moto. In the feature race, Johnson drove away from the battle for second, securing the victory by 3.5 seconds and adding the bonus points to his total for fast lap of the race. 2011 PKC champ Travis Lowe was able to secure the second spot, with Lloyd Mack stealing third from Mandarino on the final circuit. Kevin Hernandez -- a new SKUSA racer from Mexico -- was fifth in his first start of the season.

The 2012 season is shaping up to be another exciting year for Superkarts! USA, and its flagship regional program is helping to build the momentum. The California ProKart Challenge returns to the track for its second round of the season, traveling to the Willow Springs Kart Track in Rosamond on March 23-24. The excitement from the opening event in Buttonwillow is sure to carry over to this weekend’s action when the eight divisions continue their battle for a piece of the $65,000 prize package offered this year by SKUSA.
The championship fight for the Extreme Karting S1 Pro Stock Moto division should be a close affair throughout the season. Defending champion Brad Dunford left Buttonwillow with the feature win. Jimmy McNeil was in command through much of the day, before he and 2010 champ Clinton Schoombee made contact battling for the main event victory. Their dismay allowed Dunford to slide through and start his title defense with the point lead. Schoombee finished third behind Colorado driver Cory Milne, and sits second in the chase just 20 points back -- with McNeil in third, back just six. Competition should be even stronger this weekend, as Daniel Langon will be joining the field for his debut run in S1. After getting shut out in qualifying, veteran Matt Johnson led the way at round one for the Leading Edge Motorsports TaG Senior class. The #3 SKUSA plate holder scored both heat wins and the feature checkered flag to start the year on top. Young gun Camden Geise was the top qualifier and finished second behind Johnson to now sit second in the points chase ahead of defending champ Travis Lowe.
