Superkarts! USA Begins Registration for Pro Tour SpringNationals
Thursday, 01 March 2012 11:33
Three months have passed since the record breaking SuperNationals XV completed the 2011 season for the Superkarts! USA organization. Now that the 2012 campaign is here, with plans set in motion for the regional programs across the country, preparation has begun for the third year of the SKUSA Pro Tour, starting with the SpringNationals. The event is set for April 20-22 at the Phoenix Kart Racing Association (PKRA) facility in Glendale, Arizona, as the first two rounds of the five-race championship challenge will set the bar for shifterkart and TaG competition in North America. SKUSA is happy to announce that online registration for the SpringNationals has now been opened.

“We had a great launch to the year at our ProKart Challenge opener at Buttonwillow, and the development of two new regional series is very exciting,” offers Tom Kutscher, SKUSA President. “The momentum is positive from last year’s SuperNats, and based on the feedback we’re getting from teams and drivers, I think this year’s Pro Tour is going to be very strong. Now that the online registration is open, we’ll be able to see which drivers will enter to be part of the program.”
The 2012 edition of the SKUSA Pro Tour will add two new tracks to its resume, closing out at the SuperNationals in November. The PKRA Formula K Raceway was a stop in the organization’s ProMoto Tour (April 2000 was the last visit) and saw a number of karting’s best battle each other, including Scott Speed, AJ Allmendinger and hometown driver Michael McDowell, all now professional race car drivers. The 3/4-mile circuit is a challenging test of man and machine with 12 turns and only one long straightaway to catch your breath. For the SpringNationals, the ‘Full Track Clockwise’ layout will be the course reserved for the event, and no one will be allowed to test on this same configuration within 30 days of the event.

The SummerNationals will travel to Tooele, Utah, site of the immaculate Miller Motorsports Park, on July 20-22. Opened in 2006, the 9/10-mile course has seen a number of national and regional programs visit the facility, although this will be the first trip for Superkarts! USA. The Pro Tour will then complete its final stop with the 16th running of the SKUSA SuperNationals at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on November 14-18. While the numbers reached in 2011 were massive, the same is projected in 2012 - with the championship chases again coming to a close in the Pro Tour divisions. The SpringNationals and SummerNationals will continue the double-race format, with the SuperNationals as the fifth race counting toward the SKUSA Pro Tour championship standings. This year, however, the single drop allowed for each driver cannot include the SuperNationals, but rather one of the four previous race days.

The class structure for the 2012 SKUSA Pro Tour will reflect that of last year’s class roster with eight categories: four Stock Moto and four Touch and Go (TaG). The internal ladder program developed by SKUSA will provide another exciting season of racing with several drivers moving up in the ranks, including a number of 2011 Pro Tour champions. The following is the class structure for the 2012 SKUSA Pro Tour:

S1 - Pro Stock Moto – 15 years of age and older
S2 - Semi-Pro Stock Moto – 15 years of age and older
S4 - Masters Stock Moto – 30 years of age and older
S5 - Junior Stock Moto – 12-15 years of age
TaG Senior - 15 years of age and older
TaG Masters - 30 years of age and older
TaG Junior - 12-15 years of age
TaG Cadet - 9-12 years of age

A full prize package is still forming and will continue to grow in the coming weeks. Included will be cash payouts to the headline categories -- S1 Pro Stock Moto and TaG Senior -- for the top-three finishers each weekend, as well as in the final championship standings. Also included will be the guaranteed SuperSunday starting positions for the top-three in each Pro Tour category point chase leading into the SuperNationals. Lastly, the drivers who are fortunate enough to be crowned champions in each category will earn a spot in the ‘Circle of Champions’ program for 2013, which will provide sponsored entry into the Pro Tour. For 2012, Daniel Bray (S1), Kyle Hathcox (S2), Jimmy McNeil (S4), Austin Schimmel (S5), Brett Felkins (TaG Senior), Brian McHattie (TaG Master), Jake Craig (TaG Junior) and Colton Herta (TaG Cadet) will all have their entry, race tires, fuel and oil sponsored by Superkarts! USA as the 2011 Pro Tour champions.

Also of importance is SKUSA’s newest program to reward those who support their Pro Tour and regional series – the new ‘Priority Entry Schedule' for the SuperNationals. In recent years, many of the classes at the SuperNats have reached capacity weeks before the event, leaving stalwart SKUSA supporters without an opportunity to compete in the country’s biggest event. SKUSA’s answer to this issue will be to provide a laddered pre-registration schedule that will provide those who run with SKUSA throughout the year with priority entry periods before the event is opened to the entire karting community. A full overview of the program will be made available very soon, but as a quick synopsis, drivers who compete in both the SpringNationals and SummerNationals will have the first shot at entering the Las Vegas spectacular, followed by those who have run all of their SKUSA regional events up to their respective registration window. Additional restricted entry windows will be provided to those competitors who raced in a least one Pro Tour race, and then those who participated in at least a single SKUSA regional event. At the end of the priority entry windows, the remaining spots in each class will be made available to the entire karting community. The concept will ensure that virtually every SKUSA racer will get the opportunity to experience the SuperNationals festivities.

By visiting http://www.skusastore.com , competitors can fill out their online registration form to ensure they are entered for the 2012 SKUSA SpringNationals. Those drivers in the ‘Circle of Champions’ program (noted above), have earned a free race entry, race tires, fuel and oil by scoring the class championship in the 2011 season, and can contact the SKUSA office next week to lock in their entry for the SpringNationals. Pit spot selections are available for this event as well, and teams are encouraged to make a reservation as soon as all drivers under their tent have registered. Those teams looking for prime pit selections can secure their spot by signing up for a class/event sponsorship program. Those interested are asked to contact the SKUSA office directly for more information.

The host hotel for the weekend will be the Drury Inn & Suites Phoenix Happy Valley, located on the same major street as the PKRA facility, just minutes away. Those attending should reserve their rooms as soon as possible -- and definitely prior to the March 30 cutoff -- to take advantage of the special $89.95/night rate for single/double/triple/quad rooms or the $119.95/night price for two-room suites. Unfortunately, overnight camping will not be allowed on the PKRA grounds. More event details, including a tentative event schedule and tent rental information, are published on the series link at the SKUSA website (http://www.superkartsusa.com/national/skusa-pro-tour.html).
