It was a very hot and challenging day at the Phoenix Kart Racing Association with the first day of racing for the 2018 Superkarts! USA Pro Tour SpringNationals. The temperature at the Glendale, Arizona facility rose to triple digits, reaching 103 degrees before the sun began setting in the west as the podiums were completed. The focus for everyone was staying hydrated and cool as possible. SKUSA offered up a cooling station, extra medical support, and water for all drivers after they got off the track. Prior to the Finals starting, a large dust devil swept the paddock, damaging a number of tents and on-track cameras which forced an hour delay. The day was dominated by a handful of drivers, with five earning sweeps to secure footholds into the championship chase. Read full story on eKartingNews.com

One year ago, Christian Brooks found himself leading the SKUSA Pro Tour X30 Senior championship standings following two runner-up finishes at the WinterNationals. Fast forward to the present, Brooks (CRG Nordam) is in the same position thanks to a runner-up and his first Pro Tour victory at NOLA to once again be the top driver in the title chase. The difference, Brooks is competing at the SpringNationals. His Red Bull GRC schedule did not allow for him to compete in Sonoma last year, while this year he’s gunning for SpringNats victories. Brooks has plenty of success at the PKRA circuit, which puts him as an early favorite. Read full story on eKartingNews.com

Three drivers stood out at the WinterNationals in the S1 Pro Stock Honda division. Austin Garrison (J3 / CompKart) shocked the field after a wild opening few laps to escape with the lead and go on to score his first class victory. The former S2 champion could not find the magic again on Sunday, with former Pro Tour winner AJ Myers sweeping the day toward victory. Myers (TB Kart USA) ran second to Garrison on Sunday, giving the Florida driver the championship lead, ahead of 2017 SKUSA SuperNationals winner Billy Musgrave by 40 points. Musgrave (MRC / Aluminos) stood on the podium both days at NOLA to put him second in the standings, and currently holds the top spot in the EKN Driver Rankings Powered by Bell Racing USA. The four-time California ProKart Challenge champion is the only winner from the last two SKUSA Pro Tour events at PKRA to be in this year’s field. Two others who competed in both PKRA events in 2015 and 2016 were Kolton Griffin (MRC / Aluminos) and Brian Keck (CRG). Read full story on eKartingNews.com

The 2018 Superkarts! USA Pro Tour is underway with the running of the WinterNationals on March 2-4 at the NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale, Louisiana. The second edition of the WinterNationals featured 212 drivers in five IAME categories and four Honda divisions around the 1.1-mile karting course. The event kicked off the championship chases at the SKUSA Pro Tour, with two rounds in the six-round title chase completed. Teams and competitors are now turning their focus toward the next event on the SKUSA Pro Tour calendar, the SKUSA SpringNationals.

On Sunday, Superkarts! USA confirmed a change in location for the 2018 SpringNationals. Originally scheduled for the Simraceway Performance Karting Center in Sonoma, California, the May 4-6 event has been moved to the Phoenix Kart Racing Association facility in Glendale, Arizona. The ‘Formula K Raceway’ circuit is among the most challenging courses in North America, and site of the inaugural SKUSA ProMoto Tour event in 1999.

“I’m interested in supporting tracks that support what we do,” stated SKUSA President Tom Kutscher. “That’s the honest truth. We began our SKUSA Pro Tour in April 2010 in Sonoma, and brought it back last year with record numbers. Our goal was to break that mark in 2018; however, management has changed over the last few months at the facility. I did not feel comfortable not knowing if key pieces would be in place when we got there in May. I see no reason to bring the largest karting program in North America to a facility that is not interested in working with us today or in the future.”

Jake Craig repeated as a WinterNationals winner in X30 Senior (Photo: EKN)

It’s been four years since Austin Garrison won the SKUSA Pro Tour S2 Semi-Pro Stock Honda in 2014, and the Formula Works CompKart driver starred in his S1 Pro rookie debut, avoiding an early race incident that collected a few of the frontrunners before going on to pass TB Kart USA’s AJ Myers for the win. Rolison Performance Group’s Pedro Lopes (Kosmic) was also on his game to win the S2 main event. In X30 Senior, RPM’s Jake Craig (Tony Kart) showed why he is one of the absolute best in the sport, stretching away on the rear bumper of Christian Brooks (CRG) before assuming the lead to take the win. Aluminos drivers Jimmy McNeil and John Crow scored the S4 Master and Super Master wins, while Phil Giebler Racing’s Jess Peterson (Birel ART) stood on top of the X30 Master podium. Matheus Morgatto (Parolin) overcame the tremendous competition to win in X30 Junior, while Jeremy Fletcher (Tony Kart) and Caleb Gafrarar (Parolin) scored their first SKUSA Pro Tour WinterNationals wins in Mini Swift and Micro Swift, respectively.
